Frequently Asked Questions

What taxes do I pay on 1099 income?

As a 1099 contractor you pay: (1) Self-employment tax of 15.3% (covers Social Security 12.4% and Medicare 2.9%) on 92.35% of your net income, and (2) Federal income tax on your adjusted gross income after deductions. You can deduct half of your SE tax from your AGI.

What is the self-employment tax rate?

The self-employment tax rate is 15.3% — 12.4% for Social Security (on income up to $168,600 in 2024) and 2.9% for Medicare (no cap). High earners above $200K also pay an additional 0.9% Medicare tax.

When are quarterly taxes due in 2025?

IRS estimated tax deadlines for 2025: Q1 — April 15, Q2 — June 16, Q3 — September 15, Q4 — January 15, 2026. Missing deadlines triggers an underpayment penalty of roughly 7–8% per year.

What business expenses can I deduct?

Common 1099 deductions include: home office (dedicated space), mileage (67 cents/mile in 2024), phone and internet (business %), equipment and software, health insurance premiums (if self-employed), and professional development. Consult a CPA for your specific situation.

What is the safe harbor rule for estimated taxes?

To avoid penalties, pay at least 90% of your current year's tax liability OR 100% of last year's tax liability (110% if AGI > $150K). This is the 'safe harbor' rule. Our calculator shows 25% of estimated annual tax for each quarter.

Does this calculator apply to Uber, DoorDash, or Etsy income?

Yes. Any income reported on a 1099-NEC or 1099-K (from Uber, DoorDash, Instacart, Etsy, Amazon, etc.) is self-employment income subject to SE tax. Enter your total annual income from all gig platforms combined.

How do I pay my quarterly taxes?

Pay online at IRS Direct Pay (irs.gov/payments) for free. You can also use the EFTPS system or mail a check with Form 1040-ES. Direct Pay is the easiest — select 'Estimated Tax' and choose the correct tax year and quarter.

What if I also have a W-2 job?

If you have both W-2 and 1099 income, you can ask your W-2 employer to increase withholding to cover the self-employment tax on your side income. This can reduce or eliminate the need for quarterly payments. Enter only your 1099/freelance income in this calculator.
